Federal Bureau of Prisons Releases
A person prosecuted on a federal matter connected with Jackson County may serve a sentence at a BOP institution outside Missouri. The national BOP record is the correct sentenced-custody route. No federal prison is treated as the Jackson County jail, and no BOP release should be described as a county release event.
When the BOP locator displays a past release date with a location of RELEASED, the federal sentenced-custody episode ended on that date according to the official field guide. The person may have returned to the community, begun federal supervised release, or entered another state, local, or immigration custody. The locator answers whether BOP custody ended. It does not resolve every later authority.
Confirm a Federal Prison Release
Use the BOP Inmate Locator for a sentenced federal person. A register number is the strongest starting point. The locator also accepts DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers, while the name search can use exact name plus race, sex, and age filters. Match more than the name before relying on the result.
- Search by BOP register number when it is known. Otherwise enter the exact first and last name.
- Use the displayed identity fields and any known federal case information to select the right person.
- Read the location exactly. A facility name means something different from RELEASED.
- Read the release date with its time direction. A past date is historical, while a future date is projected.
- Check the federal court docket for sentence, later orders, or supervised-release context.
- If another hold or transfer is known, confirm the receiving state, local, or immigration agency.
The BOP data are updated daily, but a locator result remains one system's record. Preserve the search date, exact location wording, release date, register number, and matched name. If the result conflicts with a court order or a receiving-agency record, compare update times and ask the responsible custodian to resolve the difference.
Note: A future BOP release date is projected, while a past date paired with “Released” documents the end of BOP custody.
BOP Release Locator Fields
The official locator separates identity from status. Preserve the exact labels rather than replacing them with broader claims about freedom or discharge.
| Field or result | How to use it |
|---|---|
| BOP register number | Best identifier for matching the sentenced federal record. |
| DCDC, FBI, or INS number | Alternate federal identifiers accepted by the number search. |
| Name and filters | Biographical search route when a federal number is not known. |
| Location | A named institution indicates BOP placement; “Released” indicates the person is no longer in BOP custody. |
| Release date in the past | Historical end date for BOP custody when paired with the released location. |
| Future release date | A projected date that must not be promised as the actual exit. |
| UNKNOWN | The confinement term has not been determined in the locator. |
The official BOP search screen is available through the national Inmate Locator.
The captured search choices show why a register number can avoid the ambiguity of a common name.
Read Federal Release Status Carefully
The BOP locator field guide explains that its records cover federal inmates released after 1982. Older federal prison records may require the National Archives. A no-match can therefore mean an older record, a name or identifier mismatch, or a person who never entered the BOP sentenced system.
A federal pretrial defendant can be held under U.S. Marshals Service authority in a local contract facility. That person may appear in a local roster and later disappear without ever receiving a BOP sentenced record. In such a case, use the Western District of Missouri court docket and USMS custody route. Do not convert a missing BOP result into a release finding.
The date label also controls the conclusion. A future BOP date is projected and can change before the event. A past date with the released location is historical federal-custody evidence. Neither one identifies every condition that follows prison. The federal court docket may show a separate term of supervised release, and a receiving agency may hold the person on unrelated authority. Keep the locator result, court order, and receiving record in separate columns when reconciling them.
- BOP release
- The end of Federal Bureau of Prisons custody for the sentenced record.
- Federal supervised release
- Court-ordered community supervision that can continue after prison custody ends.
- USMS custody
- Federal pretrial or movement authority that is not a public BOP historical release record.
- Receiving custody
- A state, local, or immigration agency that takes control after BOP.
Federal Bureau of Prisons Records
The locator is a fast status source, but a court or records need may require more than a screen. Start with the register number, exact name, date of birth, federal case number, institution if known, and the date range. Ask for the existing record that carries the release status or movement, not a new explanation drafted for the request.
For the legal sentence and any later supervised-release order, use the Western District of Missouri court when that court handled the case. The PACER Case Locator can identify a federal case in another district. For older prison history outside the locator's stated period, follow the BOP field guide's National Archives route.

Federal pretrial custody: U.S. Marshals Service and the federal court
Later custody: the state, local, or immigration receiving agency
A Jackson County release or movement record is still needed if the inquiry begins with a transfer out of the county jail. That county event should name the receiving authority. The BOP result cannot prove what happened before federal sentenced custody began.
Jackson County Federal Custody Handoffs
A person can leave the Jackson County Detention Center under a federal transfer while remaining confined. The county event establishes when Jackson County custody ended. The receiving federal record establishes what began next. The Jackson County released inmate search and records path explains how to request the county movement reason, destination, and receiving agency before switching systems.
A “held for” agency option in the county portal does not prove that a BOP institution or federal contract facility exists in Jackson County. Research found no BOP prison in the county. It also found that the BOP Kansas City Residential Reentry Management office is in Kansas City, Kansas, not Jackson County, Missouri.
Use this sequence: county movement event, federal court case, USMS route for pretrial custody, BOP locator for sentenced custody, and the next receiving agency after BOP release. Each step documents one custodial boundary.
Note: The Kansas City name alone does not place a federal prison or BOP reentry office inside Jackson County, Missouri.
USMS Federal Release Records
The U.S. Marshals Service manages federal pretrial prisoners and movements but provides no complete public historical locator like BOP. A federal defendant can be housed in a local contract facility, moved among facilities, released on a court order, or transferred for a sentence while remaining under federal authority.
Use the federal court docket to identify detention, release, bond, sentencing, commitment, and supervised-release orders. Then contact the responsible USMS district through official prisoner-information channels when the present or final pretrial custody event remains unclear. A missing BOP entry is expected when the person never entered sentenced BOP custody.
When the court docket says release, confirm whether the order was carried out and whether another authority had a hold. As with a county court order, the legal authorization and the physical movement are related but distinct records.
Ask for the court case number, detention or release order, and the custodian or contract facility involved. If sentence was imposed, determine whether the person was committed to BOP or released under court terms. That branch decides whether the next public check belongs in the BOP locator or remains with the federal court and USMS.
No Jackson County BOP Prison
No Federal Bureau of Prisons institution was located within Jackson County. The facility page represents the nationwide federal release-verification route serving a Jackson County inquiry, not a claim that a BOP prison operates locally. A federal defendant tied to the county may serve a sentence anywhere the Bureau assigns the person.
If a BOP released result is followed by an immigration handoff, use the ICE Detention and Release route. If a state or local agency assumed custody, use that agency's locator or records office. If no receiving authority is shown, the BOP status and federal court record establish the federal part only.
